In the case of meaningful jewelry, rings are the reigning symbol of sentiment. For as long as they have existed, rings have symbolized devotion, eternity, and love—among other fairytale-worthy tokens of affection. This is especially true for the popular diamond eternity band, which has an everlasting essence to its design. “The eternity band style is a popular ring design which is characterized by gemstones set around the band without a blank space for the metal,” says Kathryn Money at Brilliant Earth. No matter what the occasion, a diamond eternity band is a meaningful way to mark a milestone. “These sparkling pieces are a heartfelt expression of eternal love, appreciation, and admiration,” she adds.

What makes this ring style even more special is that people have donned the design for thousands of years as it’s believed that eternity rings date back to Ancient Egypt. Talk about an eternity! Albeit ancient in design, diamond eternity rings have seen a modern upgrade in recent years with the creation of lab-grown diamonds. These diamonds are chemically no different from Earth-grown or natural diamonds. The only difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds is their origin. And, since their creation doesn’t require mining and touches fewer hands during the process, lab-grown diamonds—and lab-grown diamond eternity bands—boast a more sustainable and affordable take on fine jewelry.

Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, getting married, or having a baby, there are many reasons to invest in a lab-grown diamond eternity ring. But, as one of the more popular ring styles on the market, there are many options to sift through.

We did the sifting for you ahead with our list of the best lab-grown diamond eternity bands.

What to Look for When Shopping for an Eternity Band

Setting

One of the most important things to consider when shopping for a diamond eternity band is setting. “The setting determines how easily the band could be resized if being utilized as an heirloom piece,” says Money, adding that some settings are “more difficult to repair for new fit than others.”

Size and Shape of Gemstone

“The size and shape of the gemstone are typically tailored to the wearer’s style preference,” explains Money. “Eternity bands can be created with many gemstone shapes like a round cut, emerald cut, and pear cut, [or] even a combination of various shapes clustered together,” she adds, noting how the size of the stone dictates the overall aesthetic of the band. “Smaller diamonds contribute to a daintier look and are often easier to stack with other eternity bands while bigger diamonds boast as a chunkier statement.”

FAQ

  • Eternity rings are versatile and can be purchased “for various occasions,” says Money, noting how this ring style is great for all kinds of life milestones. “Rings are known to mark special moments and signify various commitments in a relationship, such as a promise ring, engagement ring, wedding band, and vow renewals,” Money explains. “Eternity rings especially underscore how deeply these moments are as they celebrate specific milestones: The commitment to be together, a proposal, a marriage, push presents, anniversaries, and a lifetime of love.”

  • “Because of the complexities of the design, many jewelers deter customers from resizing their eternity rings or say it isn’t possible,” says Money, adding that this isn’t necessarily true, but it does take “a highly-skilled jeweler” to execute a resizing of an eternity band.

“Some elements that play a role in the feasibility of a resizing for this style are: Metal type, stone type, and setting,” says Money, adding that silver, gold, and platinum are easy to manipulate with heat but “the stone type can affect the process.” If you’re looking to resize a diamond ring, you might be in luck, Money says diamonds, rubies, and sapphires as “highly durable” and can withstand the heat. Opals and emeralds, however, are not.

If you do want to get your diamond eternity band resized, Money says that the setting is the most important part to consider. “Stones set in a channel set—or between two strips of metal—will likely require alterations to the style as it’s the most difficult setting to work with,” she explains. “Hand, prong, or bezel-set eternity bands are easier settings as the gems can be reset even if they fall out during the process.”

  • Money says you can propose with a diamond eternity ring. “In 2022, the more unique the ring, the better,” she explains, adding that many people are more drawn to non-traditional styles in our modern time. “More and more we are finding our Millennial and Gen-Z customers are focused on the thought behind the ring and the options available to make every detail purposeful and intentional,” Money adds.
